What it does
This finds JPEG images embedded in the PDF and re-encodes them at a lower quality/resolution, leaving text and vector graphics completely untouched — so text stays sharp and selectable. It's most effective on scanned documents or PDFs with lots of photos; a mostly-text PDF won't shrink much because there's little to compress.
Some images are safely skipped rather than risk a bad result: ones with transparency, and ones using color spaces (like CMYK) that can't be reliably decoded in a browser.
How it works
Everything happens locally in your browser — your file never leaves your device. If compressing wouldn't actually make the file smaller, you get the original back unchanged rather than a larger "compressed" file.
